Advent markets

adventmarket_christkindlmarkt_frontAdventmärkte, Christkindlmarkt, Weihnachtsmärkte:  Christmas markets are popping up all over Vienna!  As we go to more of them, I’ll put up more photos, so keep checking back. As I mention below, we are not shoppers, and we don’t really get why people come to buy overpriced stuff that is mostly made elsewhere nowadays. But the atmosphere is nice, and the Viennese seem to love them. So here’s to the tradition!

Here’s the list of just the ”official” ones–those more or less sponsored by the city:

Wiener Adventzauber und Christkindlmarkt

täglich 10-22 Uhr
24.12. 10-16 Uhr
Rathausplatz, 1010 Wien

–The granddaddy of them all, this has been going for at least 50 years. It is now extremely overpriced (one ornament sells for 10 Euros, and Mozartkugeln that sell in the supermarket for 8 Euros will cost 20 Euros here), and very commercialized, but very pretty decorations, and the place is packed all the time with people drinking ”Weihnachtspunsch”, a glühwein that will get you snockered pretty fast.

Weihnachtsdorf Maria-Theresien-Platz

So-Do 11-21.30 Uhr, Fr & Sa 11-22 Uhr
24.12. 11-16 Uhr
25.+26.12. 11-19.30 Uhr
Silvesterdorf 27.-31.12.2015
11-19.30 Uhr, 31.12. 11-2 Uhr
Maria Theresien-Platz, 1010 Wien

–this one on the Platz between the Naturhistorische and the Kunsthistorische Museen, with the imposing statue to Maria Teresia in the middle, is a little less commercialized than the one on Rathausplatz, and has more artistic stuff. And the Museumsquartier that you see at the end of the market–where all the cooler new museums are–has some very boozy, hoppin’ jam sessions going on amongst their VERY hip booths.

Weihnachtsdorf Schloss Belvedere

Mo-Fr 11-21 Uhr
Sa, So & Ftg 10-21 Uhr
Prinz-Eugen-Straße 27, 1030 Wien

Weihnachtsdorf Altes AKH

Mo-Fr 14-22 Uhr
Sa, So, Ftg 11-22 Uhr
Alserstraße/Spitalgasse, Hof 1, 1090 Wien

Altwiener Christkindlmarkt

täglich 10-21 Uhr
Freyung, 1010 Wien

–there are actually two different markets here, the traditional Christmas market (on top), and the Biobauernmarkt, the organic farmers’ market,  which has lots  of organic foodstuffs and some country crafts.

Adventmarkt Am Hof

Mo-Do 11-21, Fr-So 10-21 Uhr, Gastro bis 22 Uhr
Am Hof, 1010 Wien

–More of the same, about a block from the Freyung’s markets.

Kultur- und Weihnachtsmarkt & Neujahrsmarkt Schloss Schönbrunn

täglich 10-21 Uhr
24.12. 10-16, 25.-26.12. 10-18 Uhr
Neujahrsmarkt 27.12.2015-3.1.2016
täglich 10-18 Uhr
Schloss Schönbrunn, 1130 Wien

–very nice things, the same kind of things as everywhere, but more crafty and better quality. Happy atmosphere.

Art Advent – Kunst & Handwerk am Karlsplatz

täglich 12-20 Uhr, Gastro bis 21 Uhr
Karlsplatz, 1010 Wien

–Our favorite one so far. Because there has been no snow  in Vienna in these days of global warming, this Adventmarkt on Karlsplatz has brought in tons of hay for the children’s playground. And what a backdrop! (That’s Karlskirche in the background). Oh, and the stalls have a lot of artistic stuff.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Spittelberg

Mo-Do 14-21, Fr 14-21.30 Uhr
Sa 10-21.30, So & Ftg 10-21 Uhr
Spittelberggasse, Schrankgasse, Gutenberggasse, 1070 Wien

–These are the ones in our neighborhood, on three of the little streets near our apartment (we live in what is described as the hippest neighborhood in town–hmmm.) To be quite honest, I find these all a little sad–same predictable stuff, lots of it made in China or somewhere else other than in the Austrian countryside, which was how the tradition started–as a place for country folk to bring in their goods and crafts to sell at Christmas time. Still, people come in droves, and there is a less frenetic atmosphere, much more gemütlich, than an American Christmas shopping experience.

Wintermarkt am Riesenradplatz

Mo-Fr 12-22 Uhr
Sa, So & Ftg 11-22 Uhr
24.12. 12-16 Uhr, 31.12. 12-2 Uhr
Riesenradplatz, 1020 Wien

Weihnachtsmarkt am Stephansplatz

Täglich 11-21 Uhr
24.12. 11-16 Uhr, 25.-26.12. 11-19 Uhr
Stephansplatz/Richtung Churhausgasse, 1010 Wien

–the most wonderful setting, absolutely filled with people, and because Stephansplatz and the surrounding streets are car-free, it seems very medieval.  Still the same stuff for sale….

And finally, from Mariahilfestrasse, after a lovely choral concert in the Kirche Mariahilf:

Thanks for the photos of this event. I’ve often wondered if the items sold in other countries were also made in China. Beautifully lit booths and buildings.

Yep, it’s amazing to see the throngs of people coming, when all the booths have the same stuff, and a lot of it is crap!
